Alumni Profiles

LUCY LAWLISS

Lucy Lawliss is a historical landscape architect and chief of the Cultural Landscape Program for the Southeast Region of the National Park Service. She is the author of several historical landscape publications including Olmsted in Georgia: The Residential Work of the Olmsted Firm 1895-1937, published by the Southern Garden History Society, for which she won the American Society of Landscape Architecture, Georgia Chapter Merit Award in 1994,and the Cultural Landscape Report: The Birth Home Block, Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site. Lucy is the recipient of the 2000 Georgia Women in Preservation Award and numerous other awards throughout her career. She has been active with several regional and national organizations and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for the National Association of Olmsted Parks as the Publications Committee Chair. Lucy helped to develop the cultural landscape inventory being implemented nationwide by the NPS. She has a Bachelor and Master of Landscape Architecture degree, with a certificate in Historic Preservation, from the School of Environmental Design, University of Georgia. 

SUZANNE TURNER

Suzanne Turner received a BA in the History of Art from Emory University and a MLA from the University of Georgia in 1978.She recently retired as Associate Dean of the College of Design and coordinator of the Graduate Program in Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University where she was a member of the faculty for twenty-three years. Suzanne is a consultant for the preservation and interpretation of historic and cultural landscapes and has worked on many notable projects throughout the South. She has also lectured extensively throughout the United States and in Paris. Suzanne was the recipient of a summer fellowship at Dumbarton Oaks, and is past-president of the Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation and the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture. She has authored numerous book chapters and journal articles, and is co-author of The Gardens of Louisiana: Places of Work and Wonder. Suzanne received the CELA Outstanding Teacher award in 1980 and an ASLA Award of Merit for her work on Magnolia Mound Plantation in 1986,in addition to various other honors throughout her career. 

ALLEN STOVALL

Allen Stovall has served on the faculty at the School of Environmental Design the University of Georgia since 1968, except for a short time spent teaching at the University of Virginia from the mid-1970s to early 1980s.Throughout his career, his passion for the land and commitment toward environmental values have been felt in the classroom, in his professional works, and in his influence on public decision-making. Allen has been active in all three of the SED's degree programs with special emphases in environmental education, rural preservation, and community design. Allen received his BLA degree from the University of Georgia in 1959 and his MLA from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968.He has been named a Fellow by the American Society of Landscape Architects and currently serves as coordinator for the MLA Program at the School of Environmental Design. 

SUZY O ’NEAL

Suzy O ’Neal, ASLA, AICP is a 1980 graduate of the School of Environmental Design at the University of Georgia. In more than 20 years of practice, she has developed expertise in Community Development, Streetscape Design, Parks and Recreation, Site Assessment and Evaluation, Regulatory Guidance and Project Management. She currently serves on the Georgia Transportation Authority ’s Greenspace Citizen ’s Academy, the ARC Awards of Excellence Jury, and the Gwinnett County Development Advisory Committee, as well as working on steering committees for the Sustainable Atlanta Roundtable, Georgia Parks and Recreation Association Professional Group, and the Intercollaborative Design Council. Ms. O ’Neal is past President of the Georgia Chapter, American Society of Landscape Architects, long-time chair of their Legislative Action Committee, and member of the Urban Land Institute. 

JOHN F. CROWLEY

John F. Crowley was named Dean of the School of Environmental Design at the University of Georgia in September of 1996.Prior to serving on the SED faculty from 1974-78,Jack served as planning director for Seminole, Oklahoma and as chief planner for the Oklahoma State Parks. He has also served as executive director for the Tulsa Metropolitan Area Planning commission from 1978-80,and was vice president of development for the Williams Realty Corporation in Tulsa for seven years. He established Urban Tech, Inc. in Tulsa in 1987 and in 1993 was appointed director of the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. Jack received his MA in Regional and City Planning and his PhD from the University of Oklahoma.

HOLLY B. WIEDEMANN

Holly B. Wiedemann was born, raised, and still lives on a farm in Lexington, KY. She recieved her BLA in 1978 and then went on to recieve her MBA with a focus on finance and real estate from Duke University . She is now president of AU Associates, and has developed the award-winning adaptation of the Midway School into apartments for independent seniors. She has other projects underway in Irvine, Kentucky similar to the Midway School, and in Louisville, where she is working on the renovation of the old YWCA building on Broadway.

LEERIE JENKINS, JR.

Leerie Jenkins, Jr. graduated with his BLA in 1970, received his graduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1972, and now resides in Gainsville, FL. Mr. Jenkins is currently a member of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, the Florida Council of 100, and has recently been appointed to the Florida A&M Board of Trustees. He previously served as chairman of the Jacksonville Economic Development Council from 1999 thru 2001. He is also the chairman and chief executive officer of Reynolds, Smith and Hills, Inc., an architecture, engineering, and planning business that he has been with for over 30 years.

 

DAN FRANKLIN

Dan Franklin, BLA '63, was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Dan died at the age of 87 on March 7, 2004 at Hospice Atlanta. He was 87. Dan graduate from UGA in 1938 with a degree in Economics. After a successful career working for the R.C. Cola company, he returned to the University and received a BLA in 1963 with an an intense interest in landscapes and gardens. Since that time he had been a prolific and successful garden designer in Atlanta and throughout the Southeast. Dan received numerous awards during his long career, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia Chapter of American Society of Landscpe Architects (ASLA). His legacy as a landscape architect includes over 2,000 individual projects in 10 states, and Who's Who in Amereica named him for distinction as a landscape architect. His body of work has been recognized and honored in dozens of books, magazines, and newpapers, appearing on the cover of Southern Living magazine six times. In 2001, at the age of 85, Franklin received the highest honor accorded by ASLA, being inducted as a Fellow.
