Charrette Requests
This program is part of the Center for Community Design and Preservation at the College of Environment and Design at the University of Georgia

General Charrette Host-town Responsibilities:

  1. Obtain funding
  2. Establish a steering committee who will be responsible for determining the primary focus of the charrette and handle some of the logistics
  3. Contact the College of the Environment and Design's Center for Community Design and Preservation to:
    · aid in identifying a preliminary set of issues to be addressed
    · choose date(s) for the charrette
  4. Gather information about your community including:
    · Base maps
    · History of and stories about the town
    · Historic photos of the town in its "heyday" (lots of them!)
  5. Spread the word about the charrette (Create Buzz!) especially for the community input meeting
  6. Arrange meals and accommodations for the UGA group
  7. Sit back and watch the charrette magic…
    · intense 2-3 day workshop
    · community needs assessment
    · interviews with community groups
    · prioritization of issues
    · development of recommendations
    · identifications of neighborhood development projects
    · implementation strategies development
  8. The Charrette Connection prepares the final product (products can vary from full reports, large-format posters, executive summaries, Powerpoint presentations, etc.), which are tailored to address each community's needs.
  9. Community begins implementation!

Scheduling:
Due to the large time commitment and planning/implementation effort needed to conduct a successful charrette, Public Service and Outreach schedules each charrette well in advance and generally spaces them out (depending on their size) over 1-3 months.

As soon as you think your town might be interested in a charrette, please let us know so we can begin working with you to find out what will suit your needs the best!

Town testimonials:

"... a tremendous round of applause, a bushel of appreciation for all the effort and interest, with a huge imaginary bouquet of swamp lilies surrounded by small branches from a ti ti bush!! Please relay our thanks to the other members of the team" (Ty Ty, 2002)

"I cannot begin to explain the joy and excitement when i first viewed the final product of the Unadilla Charrette. The posters, reports, and renderings were in my opinion the greatest and most inspiring works i have seen since i have been involved in the downtown project.
You and your crew of experts have hit the bull's-eye in Unadilla. I have shown the report to many people around town and all have ooed and awed..." (Unadilla, 2003)

How much do charrettes cost?

The fee structures vary depending on many different factors such as:  length of visit, number of participants, distance from Athens, services furnished by sponsor, the size of the area on which we're focusing and the final products (i.e. posters, detailed report, large-format drawings).
