Wecome to 441
A Public Service and Outreach Program at the School of Environmental
Design
at the University of Georgia
The Program
Traversing Georgia from north to south, U. S. Highway 441 stretches 367
miles through the state's mountains, piedmont, and coastal plains, linking
some of Georgia's most historic towns and beautiful scenery. The U. S.
441 Heritage Corridor, Inc. was formed in 2000 for the purpose of preserving
the history and natural beauty of 441 through the use of tourism as an
economic development tool. The non-profit organization contracted with
the Public Service & Outreach Office for assistance in planning and
marketing historic 441, which in 2001 became the first highway in Georgia
to be granted heritage highway status by the General Assembly. Planning
and marketing materials were developed during a summer studio, and the
Public Service & Outreach Office continues to assist the organization
with the further development of planning and marketing materials, assistance
in seeking grant funds, and ongoing staff support.
Summer Studio
During the summer of 2002, twelve students and three professors from the
College of Environment & Design worked on the 441 project. Identifying
the needs of the corridor and its marketing, the 441 team developed a
planning report, a new marketing brochure and poster, and an expandable
GIS database.
