ANNUAL REPORT 2002-2003
The historic resource survey partnership program with the Georgia
Transmission Corporation (GTC) and Historic Preservation Division
of the Department of Natural Resources (HPD) has completed its
second year a five-year funding cycle. Melissa Roberts, Find It
program coordinator, has finished her first year with the program.
Five MLA/MHP graduate students have conducted survey fieldwork
in Fulton, Jackson and Putnam County throughout the 2002-2003
fiscal year. Find It is currently preparing for an exhibit in
the College of Environment and Design - Hubert Owens Library's
Circle Gallery that will showcase survey fieldwork in Walton,
Fulton, Jackson and Putnam counties.
Major accomplishments:
- Developed a consistent graphic identity for Find It that includes
poster design, informative brochures, notepads, and other marketing
tools;
- Worked with UGA Public Affairs to distribute the Find It press
release to local, state and national print services;
- Finished the Walton, Campbellton Road corridor, Jackson and
Putnam County fieldwork;
- Completed the Jackson County data entry which included over
2,000 resources that have since aided the Northeast Georgia
Regional Development Center (NEGRDC) in comprehensive plan development;
- Trained two first-year MHP graduate students for summer surveying
internships. In Fall 2003, the positions will become full-time
graduate assistantships;
- Partnered with Georgia's Regional Development Centers (RDC)
to better market the survey program. This partnership will allow
for a more accurate assessment of counties in need of survey
assistance;
- Attended the Scenic Byway Conference in Helen, Georgia in
conjunction with the Historic Piedmont Scenic Byway project
and the Putnam County survey;
- Assisted Allen Stovall's Rural Preservation class in a survey
of the Old Phoenix Loop in Putnam County. This work contributed
to the Putnam County survey work completed in early July 2003;
- Developed a PowerPoint program "Find It and Survey Methodology"
that was presented at the Historic Preservation Commission training,
Georgia State University's MHP Program planning class, and the
Regional Development Center's Preservation Planner's quarterly
meeting;
- Invited Kinney Clark (Cultural Resources GIS specialist at
the New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office) for an information
exchange on GIS initiatives, partnership opportunities, and
technological advancements in survey fieldwork. Presentations
were made to the steering committee, UGA students and local
preservation professionals.
- Created the Find It image database for all survey documentation.
- Purchased computers and digital cameras to enhance the technology
utilized during the fieldwork and data entry process.

2004
Major accomplishments:
- Continued and updated the graphic identity for Find It that includes poster design, brochures, notepads, and other marketing tools;
- Developed and updated the FindIt website;
- Finished the Oconee County fieldwork, data entry and image organization during the Spring 2004 semester (totaling 520 resources in unincorporated Oconee);
- Completed all data entry associated with the Newton County unincorporated survey in Fall 2003, which totaled 716 resources.
- Trained first-year MHP graduate students for the summer surveying internships in Brooks County. In Fall 2004, the positions became full-time graduate assistantships;
- Completed the fieldwork, data entry, and research for the Brooks County summer survey that included a four-week stay in Quitman , Georgia to survey 476 unincorporated resources;
- Trained additional MHP students for Fall 2004 survey assistantships. This training entailed several meetings with the HPD statewide survey coordinator to discuss proper fieldwork techniques and demonstrations.
- Met bi-annually with the FindIt steering committee to determine the upcoming survey schedule. Meriwether County , the current survey area, is one month away from fieldwork completion. The current number of unincorporated resources stands at 459.
- Continued to partner with Georgia 's Regional Development Centers (RDC) to better market the survey program. This partnership continues to allow for a better assessment of counties in need of survey assistance;
- Updated all CCDP computers and digital cameras to maintain technology stability;
- Worked closely with HPD and ITOS to get data together for the NAHRGIS demonstration project;
- Attended meetings and visioning sessions to better understand the type of scanning software and internet-accessible applications for FLAMINGO. Worked with the Owens Library graduate student to catalog FindIt images for preliminary part of this grant.
SUMMARY OF RESEARCH/ OTHER CREATIVE ACTIVITIES FOR THE PERIOD:
- Worked closely with the Circle Gallery to develop an exhibit for the Brooks County Summer 2004 survey project.
- Attended the Jackson EMC Annual Meeting with 30 framed images from the 2002 Jackson County survey (GTC then requested that these images be on permanent display at the Crawford Long Museum in downtown Jefferson).
- Displayed 31 final images of Newton County in the Center for Community Planning and Preservation in downtown Covington , Georgia . The exhibit was well-received and has led the city events coordinator to propose a purchase price for the rights to the images used in the exhibit.
- Worked again with Bike Athens and Tour de Sprawl to auction several FindIt images from the Brooks County survey. All funds were then donated to Bike Athens for future alternative transportation projects.
- Volunteered all FindIt services to help with the Community Approach to Planning Prince Avenue project;
SUMMARY OF TEACHING ACTIVITIES FOR THE PERIOD:
- Lectured the "Find It and Survey Methodology" presentation to the Georgia Historic Preservation Commission training, Georgia State University 's MHP Program planning class, and Wayde Brown's Cultural Resource Assessment class.
- Developed a "Sense of Place and the Importance of Survey" presentation to present to Michelle McClellan's Honors History class in May 2004.
- Presented to several historical societies, including the Oconee County Historical Society, to better inform different counties about the purpose of FindIt and the importance of survey.

2005
- Lectured "Find It and Survey Methodology" to the Georgia Historic Preservation Commission training and Wayde Brown's Cultural Resource Assessment class;
- Displayed 31 final images of Newton County in the Center for Community Planning and Preservation in downtown Covington , Georgia . The exhibit was well-received and has led the city events coordinator to propose a purchase price for the rights to the images used in the exhibit;
- Attended meetings and visioning sessions to better understand the type of scanning software and internet-accessible applications for FLAMINGO. Worked with the Owens Library graduate student to catalog FindIt images for the preliminary part of this grant;
- Updated all CCDP computers and digital cameras to maintain technology standards;
- Worked closely with HPD and ITOS to get data together for the NAHRGIS demonstration project;
- Coordinated a mini-exhibit in the Founder's House of FindIt's South Georgia images for SED 2005 Alumni weekend;
- Finished all fieldwork and data entry for Meriwether County . Approximately 700 historic resources were identified and surveyed. This information will go to HPD for additional evaluation before public release.
- Started the Morgan County fieldwork process. Approximately half of the fieldwork is complete with an estimated date of completion in late May.
2006
- Lectured the "Find It and Survey Methodology" presentation to the Georgia Historic Preservation Commission training and Wayde Brown's Cultural Resource Assessment class;
- Trained five MHPs for FindIt summer internships that continued into Fall 2006 assisantships;
- Updated all CCDP computers and digital cameras to maintain technology application;
- Worked closely with HPD and ITOS to continue with NAHRGIS data collection;
- Completed historic resource surveys in the unincorporated parts of Paulding, Lumpkin, Thomas, Houston and Henry County.
- Collaborated with Thomasville Landmarks, while housed for two weeks at the Osceola Plantation Lodge, to conduct survey in unincorporated areas of Thomas County .
- Worked closely with GTC External Affairs to prepare information material, maps, and survey images for Paulding and Gwinnett Counties .
- Attended several EMC Fall annual meetings to promote FindIt and survey work within their region.
- Presented survey data for the Kennesaw Ave historic district to Marietta HPC.
